Created by Dan Emmett in 1859, an Unionist before the Civil War, the piece "Dixie" rose in popularity in matter of moments when he first created for a stage performance. Although the south had recognized it as the unofficial anthem of the Confederates, it remained popular in the North even after the outbreak of Civil War, albeit the lyric had changed a little.
The music and the lyrics of "Dixie" was trying to represent the south as the land of paradise, as the lyric continued to focus on how Dixie land is somewhere that people want to live. The Confederates used this piece to represent the south as a place of paradise, and to represent that they don't want the south to be changed by the North.
